MUKL Committee Kaarst: important decisions

Mobilität, Umwelt, Klimaschutz - Kaarst packt an.

The City of Kaarst's Mobility, Environment, Climate Protection and Agriculture Committee (MUKL) met on 12 February 2025. Key topics relating to urban development were discussed - from new mobility concepts to environmental and climate protection measures.

New Büttgen - Kaarst city bus route: a milestone for mobility

A key topic was the presentation of the feasibility study for the new city bus route between Büttgen and Kaarst. The aim is to connect the "Kaarster Kreuz" industrial estate and the IKEA location to the existing public transport network. This should create a fast connection between the S-Bahn lines S28 (Düsseldorf) and S8 (Mönchengladbach).

The commissioned planning office VIA eG presented various options for the route. Variant 5 emerged as the preferred solution: This offers improved access to Büttgen while at the same time ensuring operational stability and better connections with existing bus and railway lines. The aim is to start operations in 2026.

The CDU Kaarst expressly welcomes this concept, as it brings great benefits for both commuters and the local economy. We are also committed to ensuring that an economically viable model is developed with the involvement of businesses such as IKEA in order to minimise the costs for the town.

Mobility survey shows: More cycling in Kaarst

The results of the mobility survey were presented. One positive aspect to emphasise is the increased cycling mode share in domestic traffic, which has grown from 14 % (2013) to 20 % (2023). Kaarst has a high mobility rate: 91.6 % of Kaarst residents travel outside the home on an average working day. The average journey length is 7.0 km and the average journey time is 19.2 minutes. This confirms that Kaarst is a lively city in which mobility plays a major role. The CDU remains committed to safe and well-connected cycling in Kaarst in order to promote this positive trend.

Citizens' concerns about road safety in Holzbüttgen

A citizen petition supported by the CDU on the traffic situation in a 50/30 zone in Holzbüttgen was discussed. Residents demanded a reduction in lorry traffic and an extended 30 km/h zone. The administration explained that blanket speed limits are not possible in the reserved network, but that a 30 km/h zone extension on Königstraße has been promised. We support such measures to increase road safety and are in favour of a realistic and feasible solution.

Nature conservation and climate adaptation in Kaarst

Sustainable adaptation to climate change was also discussed. The administration presented a concept that includes natural climate protection measures. In addition, two felling licences for protected trees were granted. The CDU Kaarst ensures that necessary interventions are always combined with appropriate compensatory measures.

Conclusion: Constructive work for Kaarst's future

The meeting showed that Kaarst is well positioned to meet the challenges of the future. We are consistently committed to pragmatic solutions that keep our city liveable - be it through modern mobility concepts, a Responsible urban development or the protection of the environment.
